IRISH DRAUGHT HORSE STUDBOOK (BREED REGISTER) CLASSIFICATIONS
| Horse Sport Ireland (HSI) holds
the stud book of origin for the Irish Draught horse in the European
Union. HSI changed the ID Studbook registration categories and
inspection procedures in January 2010. The Irish Draught Horse
Society (GB) is legally obliged to comply with EU Directives and
hence made a harmonisation agreement with HSI in 2011. Breed
registration categories are now in line with Ireland and all stock
inspected from 2011 onwards is classified at the point of inspection
as Class 1, 2 or 3. Agreement has been reached with HSI on the
status of most of our stock which was inspected prior to this date.
Negotiations continue in respect of certain categories of animals,
so we are still in a transition phase. April 2012 |
Horse Sport Ireland categories
Class 1 (mares and stallions)
Horses that meet the pedigree, veterinary and inspection requirements of the
Irish Draught Studbook. Stallions previously classified as RID can apply through
the IDHS GB office, or via a form on our website, to be accepted into Class 1 in
Ireland. This is entirely voluntary.
Class 2 (mares and stallions)
Horses that meet the pedigree and veterinary requirements of the Irish Draught
Studbook, but have not met inspection requirements. Stallions which were
previously classified as Grade 2 in Great Britain may apply through the IDHS GB
office to be accepted into Class 2.
Progeny of Class 1 or Class 2 parents are eligible for Class 1 on inspection.
This is subject to review by HSI in 2013.
Class 3 (mares and stallions)
Horses that do not meet veterinary requirements. The progeny of these animals
are not eligible for inspection.
Class 4 (males and females of all ages)
For all foals and other uninspected stock, including stallions, which have not
come forward for inspection. The progeny of these animals are not eligible for
inspection, unless the uninspected parent is subsequently graded into Class 1 or
Class 2.
Supplementary (Grade Up) Register (mares only)
This is for inspected fillies and mares that are registered on the Sport Horse
Register. They must meet the following requirements: one RID parent, three RID
grandparents and the remaining quarter to be verified as Thoroughbred, Connemara
or Irish Sport Horse. Progeny of mares graded into this category following
inspection are eligible for Class 1 (GB). This category is to be reviewed in
2013.
Categories used in Great Britain only
RID (mares and geldings)
For existing RID mares;
For existing geldings by a RID stallion out of a RID mare.
RID stallions
For all stallions graded in Great Britain up to and including 2010, which met
official inspection and veterinary requirements in operation in Great Britain at
the time, whose owners have not subsequently successfully applied for Class 1
status. RID (GB) is a term agreed with HSI and is used outside Great Britain
only, to identify some stallions which were approved in Great Britain between
2001 and 2010.
Any of the living stallions in this group can be put forward for consideration
for Class 1 status on a voluntary basis. This requires acceptable endoscope and
x-ray examinations. This group includes specifically named stallions, plus dead
and gelded stallions which are not in a position to undergo further veterinary
examination.
NB: These stallions met all the inspection and veterinary requirements in
place in Great Britain at the time. The progeny of all RID (GB) stallions are
eligible for Class 1 on inspection and hence have equal status to progeny of RID
and Class 1/Class 2 stallions in this country.
Grade 2 (GB) (Stallions only)
For stallions inspected up to 2010, that met the pedigree and veterinary
requirements of the IDHS (GB) Breed Register at the time, but did not meet
inspection requirements.
Any of the living stallions in this group can be put forward for consideration
for Class 2 status on a voluntary basis. This would require endoscope and x-ray
examination.
Grade 3 ID (Stallions only)
For purebred stallions inspected up to 2010, that failed to pass, or failed to
undertake the veterinary examination. These animals may be automatically
transferred to Class 3 in Great Britain and Ireland.
AID (Appendix Irish Draught)
For existing Appendix Irish Draught mares;
For existing geldings by a RID stallion out of an AID mare.
Continuing inspection of mares by a RID stallion out of a SID mare for AID is
currently under negotiation.
SID (Supplementary Irish Draught)
For existing SID mares.
Continuing inspection of mares born before 1 January 2001 which are eligible
for SID, is currently under negotiation.
