IDHS(GB) GRANTS

There are various grants and premiums available to MEMBERS of the Irish Draught Horse Society (GB). These are generously sponsored by The Horserace Betting Levy Board and The Hornby Trust and are as follows:

THE HORSERACE BETTING LEVY BOARD FOAL GRANTS
The HBLB Foal Grants are given to breeders of purebred foals, i.e. foals by RID sires out of graded (RID/AID/SID) dams, that must be registered with the Society before 31 October in the year they are foaled.

In order to register a foal, an Identification Diagram must be completed by a Veterinary Surgeon and sent to the Office, together with the Covering Certificate and correct fee.

PLEASE NOTE: If the foal has two RID parents, a Veterinary Surgeon is required to take a DNA hair sample from both the foal and its dam (if the dam has not already been sampled) at the time the foal is identified. The cost is £10 per head for the DNA kit and this should be sent to the Office in good time as registrations will not be processed until parentage has been verified.

MARE TRAVEL GRANTS
These grants are funded by the Horserace Betting Levy Board and are available to Members as an incentive to encourage and assist owners of RID mares to use the services of the RID stallions of their choice and make it possible for more distant studs to be considered.

Grants are three-tiered - those travelling the greater distances attracting the higher rates - but will only become effective if the applicant is travelling to a Stud at least 50 miles away from the mare’s permanent residence.

Provision has also been made for Members with RID mares to receive a flat-rate payment - at the lowest tier level - towards the cost of the hire of an Equitaner where AI is used from RID stallions.

The amount of all grants will be dependent on the final total number of applicants.

IMPORTANT –

1. Application Forms are available from the IDHS(GB) Office and must be returned by 31 October in the year the mare is covered.

2. All applications must be accompanied by a copy of the Covering Certificate and in addition, in the case of AI, a copy of the AI Insemination form signed by the Vet.

3. All applications must be accompanied by written confirmation to support the mileage claimed (i.e. route map downloaded from the Internet).

4. Only one such Travel Grant shall be payable per mare during the covering season - i.e. it will not be possible to claim a grant for transporting the mare to Stud and then to claim again for the return journey home.

HORNBY TRUST PREMIUM SCHEME
The Hornby Premium was devised to recognise the exceptional mares in the breeding herd and to encourage their owners to breed pure Irish Draughts.

The Premiums are awarded every year at the Mare Gradings, where the successful mares need to score a minimum of 125 points (out of 145) on their own merits. All graded Irish Draught mares (RID/AID/SID) are eligible for consideration, providing they have their own foal at foot by an RID stallion. The foal itself is not normally taken into account when assessing the mare. However, from 2004, if the mare falls short by five marks of the total required number of points and has a creditable foal, the Inspectors may use their discretion and award a Hornby Premium.

If you would like to put your mare forward for Hornby Premium assessment you should contact the Office to request an application form. There is no charge.

SELECT HORNBY PREMIUM MARE
A mare, on being awarded her third Hornby Premium, is given the title of ‘SELECT HORNBY PREMIUM MARE’. She holds this title for the rest of her life and does not come forward for assessment again. From that point onwards all her purebred foals (by an RID stallion) are registered free of charge (the only requirement being that her owner is a Member of the Society).

If you believe your mare has gained three or more Hornby Premiums please contact the Office.
