IDHS(GB) Performance Awards Scheme

The Performance Awards scheme was introduced around 1993 and very kindly set-up by Mrs Cook. The objectives of the Performance Award Scheme are to encourage and reward the performance capabilities of the Irish Draught horse, both pure and part-bred. The importance of versatility is recognised and it is hoped that the wide range of events and classes will encourage even the single horse owner to take part.

The competition has awards, in the form of rosettes and trophies, for Unaffiliated, Junior, Pure Bred and Overall Champion. All competitors who gain over 300 points will receive a rosette and an achievement card. Points can be gained in a variety of disciplines, ranging from showing, show-jumping, dressage, long distance and hunter trials to name but a few, affiliated and un-affiliated sections are catered for also. The aforementioned disciplines can be ridden astride or side saddle.

In 2007 In-Hand, Loose Jumping, Le Trec and Jump Cross were added to the points system, as-well as a special award for the most points gained In-Hand. At just £10 (£5 for Juniors, i.e. up to 18 years), and £15 for non-members,  it does encourage the average rider or competitor to get out with their Irish Draughts and show everyone just how versatile they are. The 'Rules & Conditions for the Irish Draught Horse Society Performance Awards' can be viewed below.

December 2009. The Irish Draught Horse Society in line with other breed societies award schemes, have brought in a new ruling for 2009/10 Performance Awards Scheme that the 2008/09 year’s winner cannot compete in the SECTION that they won. However, they can still enter and compete in other categories; the ruling was brought in to encourage new faces to compete. Previous winners will be eligible to compete again in 2010/11 in the category that they have previously won.

Performance Awards 2009/10 Winners

Here we go again, doesn’t seem like 5 minutes since I was preparing this for last year. Sadly, although we had over 20 horses enter, only 12 returned their cards for this season. I am aware that a couple of horses where out of action through injury, but it is such a shame each year that a small minority don’t send them back.

I would love to see some new faces and I am aware that a couple of people have asked for other sections, sadly until we have the entries overall we cannot go down this avenue. It doesn’t cost much to enter - £10 for members and £15 for non members, for further information download an entry form or send a SAE to Liz Langford, Coldnose Farm, Dewsall, Hereford, HR2 8DD.

It has been great to do so well in the performance awards again. Unfortunately at the end of 2009 we started to go backwards having serious problems with the canter. Missy also suffered three bouts of illness throughout the year, just as we were getting back on track she'd fall ill again. This meant we not only missed competitions but also lessons and training sessions. My aim for the year was to do some affiliated dressage and hopefully we will be competing in our first affiliated dressage event on 19th December 2010.

Aims for next year are more affiliated dressage and more show jumping / arena eventing which Missy does seem to enjoy. Also we are looking forward to the IDHS breed show as we will be aiming to do more classes. I know I say this every year but she really is one in a million and I can’t imagine life without her.

RID Champion: Grin “N” Bear It & Ann Harrison

Grin ‘n’ Bear It. 7 yrs, by Roma Diamond Skip out of Lennox Charlotte.

Ben has been such a good boy this year, demonstrating the versatility of our wonderful breed.
The highlights of his Dressage were BD wins at Novice and Elementary level with scores hitting the 70% mark. At the end of the year he qualified for the Petplan Open Novice Championships and then won the Elementary Open Area Festival at Hargate Arena, so has qualified for two classes at the BD Winter Championships at Hartpury next spring. He was also a member of the winning team at the Riding Club Senior Open Dressage Championships at Lincoln, coming third individually – and he won both his classes at the Breed Show, including the new Elementary, winning a lovely rug.

During the summer he enjoyed some Showing, and was placed in a couple of strong Open Working Hunter classes, including 2nd at the Breed Show.

He did nine BE Events during the season, and won three of them. Firstly at Brand Hall BE90, where he finished on his dressage score of 18, then he went up a level and won the BE100 at Cumwhinton, (got his ‘photo in Horse and Hound for that one!), and finished the season by winning the BE90RF at Bishop Burton, qualifying
for the Grassroots Championships at Badminton 2011.

Having qualified for two National Championships next April our aim for the coming winter is for both of us to stay in one piece!
Ann Harrison.

Junior Champion: Littlehill Flynn & Kirsty Finnie

What a year it has been! I am delighted that Flynn has done so well again this year. He has been fantastic from the start until the end. We had a trip down to Lincoln this year for the British Riding Club National Championships as Flynn qualified for both the Showjumping & Dressage back in June. I couldn’t have asked from anymore from him at the Championships as he took everything in his stride and was very well placed in the Dressage considering our 12 hour journey to get there. Flynn is also successfully progressing at Novice level at Dressage at the moment and we are both enjoying it very much. Flynn also did his first Riding Club camp this year which he behaved impeccably and enjoyed very much. As well as having a lot of fun this year we also still worked very hard throughout the summer which is reflected in our success in the show ring this season. This has been an overall brilliant year for Flynn and I but would not have been possible without the help of my instructor, Fiona MacKinnon, a previous winner of the Performance Awards. I have enjoyed this season very much as Flynn has been a pleasure to compete and own once again and I’m thoroughly looking forward to taking part in the Performance awards next year.
Kirsty Finnie

Veteran Champion: Chance Cove & Liz Langford

Chance Cove 18 year old by Knock Boy Hero

Usually on the sidelines and enjoying semi-retirement Chance has this season been back in the showjumping arena, proving she can still do it. One moment which will stick in my mind was when we where coming out of the arena after jumping clear against the clock, and the gate man was saying to a lady “I can assure you madam she has jumped the proper course, she is just fast”. On that occasion Chance had knocked 10 seconds off the time to take the class. Also, been back in the dressage arena, proving again she still knows the business.

Still thinking of whether to send her back to stud one more time, but I will decide that in the Spring, in the meantime we are just going to enjoy our winter hacks.

In-Hand Champion Bannvalley Pride of Midnight & Jo Ayroyd

3yr old colt owned by Pride of Meath ex Carrickrock Midnight Dancer.

2010 has been another successful year for Elvis and I am delighted that he has won this award for the second year running. We have shown him in youngstock, hunter and pure-bred classes where he has won or been placed every time out as well as winning several championships, the most memorable being winning the 'Champion Heavy Horse of Great Britain' at the Royal London Show. Everyone who meets him comment on his good manners and gentle nature, he likes nothing better than to be surrounded by people making a fuss of him, he certainly has been flying the Irish Draught flag and even has his own fan club!

A new chapter in his life has just started, having been lightly backed in the autumn I am hoping to have him ready for some ridden shows and maybe even some dressage in 2011, which will give him a good grounding for what I really want to do showjumping and hunting. Here’s to hoping his ridden career is as successful as his in-hand one.
